Iranian artist Saina Soleimanpour has staged a performance on Istanbul streets, bringing her bedroom onto the cobblestones during a Covid-19 curfew.
The performance aimed to defy the mistreatment of women based on their clothing in Turkey.
The city threatened to flood her bed.
“The absence of anyone on the street turned the street into my home”, the Turkey-based artist said, according to ‘bigumigu’ IG page.
“Here in Turkey, it’s considered shameful for a woman to wear a skirt in public, or even to use her body freely,” she told Girs Are Awesome when she performed a similar performance in August.
“If you’re feeling sexy one day and decide to take a walk down the street wearing an outfit that expresses that, you’ll be met with unwelcome glances and harassment — and sometimes even assault. If you’re going to wear something sexy, you’d really only do it at home” she added.
Her act to take back the street was met with a tongue-in-cheek remark by the landlord, aka Kadıköy municipality.
“Would you like a watery wake-up service from our Cleaning Services teams? 😏,” commented Kadikoy's official IG account.
“My virtual class starts at 9:30, FYI,” she replied.
The Kadikoy account also went to the bigumigu IG page and made the same comment:
“If we had news, (she) would also benefit from our morning watery wake-up service🤗,” it wrote.
The artist known as @saynarte on Instagram focuses much of her work on themes of self-portraits and eroticism.
